Plant A Day – Jack in the Pulpit

Arisaema triphyllum

It’s quite possible that Jack in the Pulpit is the most photographed wildflower in the world.  Of course, that doesn’t stop me from shooting it whenever I see a nice one.

It is a peculiar and quite pleasing flower to look at.  It is very distinctive with its two leaves of three leaflets and Jack in his pulpit.  It can be quite variable in size and coloration.  I’ve seen little ones less than a foot tall, and others at over three feet tall.

Jack in the Pulpit has two leaves each with three leaflets. Thus the species name of triphyllum. "tri" of course means three and "phyllum" (with two l's rather than one) means leaf.

The fruits of the Jack in the Pulpit are the brightest things in the woods during late summer.
