Polygonum lapathifolium

Polygonum is such a diverse genus of plants.  It includes the knotweeds, smartweeds, jumpseed, bindweeds, false buckwheat and a few others.  I wonder how taxonomists decide something is a genus and include so many various looking plants, while others only have one or two species?

These little things around the base of the leaves are called ocrea. Some species have cilia (little hairs) sticking out all around them. This species does not!
