Plant A Day – Upright Prairie Coneflower

Upright Prairie Coneflower Ratibida columnifera

Upright Prairie Coneflower
Ratibida columnifera

There are two representatives of the Ratibida genus in Indiana, this and Pinnate Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata), also known as Gray-headed Coneflower.

This species is more of a western plains plant and is rarely found in Indiana.  It is quite showy and occasionally ends up in prairie restorations in Indiana, but probably shouldn’t be.
